Mazda EZ-6 and Arata debut at Beijing Auto Show

by Peter Louisson
April 27, 2024

The Mazda EZ-6 is the first of a series of new energy vehicles developed and manufactured by Changan Mazda in cooperation with Mazda. It will launch in China before year’s end, both in EV and PHEV guises. The Mazda Arata, unveiled at the same time in Beijing, will also go on sale by the end of 2025.

The Mazda EZ-6 is an electrified model that combines Mazda’s Kodo design language with its ‘car and driver as one’ feel. Two versions will be available, a pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) and a plug-in hybrid example.

The EZ-6 design features a simple, flowing coupe form. Dynamic performance reflects Mazda’s commitment to creating drivers’ cars. Its curated handling and braking package enable the car to respond in a linear manner to the driver’s intentions.

Other special features include a 50:50 weight distribution for the BEV model, fully independent suspension and a powered rear spoiler that improves high-speed stability.

There’s also an intelligent drive system for driver support, accident mitigation and intelligent parking. Certain cabin features can be operated by voice, touch or gesture control.

The BEV model has an expected driving range of 600km, while the PHEV model is likely to achieve over 1000km on a single tank of fuel. The EZ is 4921mm long by 1890mm wide, and rides on 19-inch alloys. It is a RWD vehicle.

Guess it's a Mazda then.

The Mazda Arata is a design concept based on the Mazda philosophy of “Uplifting the Human Spirit.” As a crossover SUV, it creates a sleek, elegant impression. Mazda hopes it will appeal to the sophisticated taste of Chinese consumers. The design concept attempts to evoke soulful and futuristic concepts while also being modern and exciting. It features a hunkered look in profile, emphasising the dynamic Kodo design philosophy.

The ‘cross-wing’ rear combination lamps, resembling two overlapping wings, is part of Mazda’s new branding.

Air tunnels on both sides of the front bumper, and on the inside of the D-pillars improve aerodynamic characteristics and lower energy use. They also lend a futuristic aesthetic to the Arata.

Like the sign says, Mazda Arata.
