In Australia, a new entry-level Mazda CX-60 model features a four-cylinder powertrain. And the big question is whether or not it is coming here.
Known as the G25 powertrain, the non-electrified IL4 develops 138kW/250Nm and powers the rear wheels. Across the ditch it s available in three grade trims. Over there, it kicks off at $44,240 so if it comes here we’d expect a price point of under $50k.
In Australia that means it costs $6000 less than the AWD model with the 3.3-litre turbocharged mild hybrid inline six-cylinder petrol.
The G25 is slightly thirstier than the six-pot hybrid, with a combined fuel consumption figure of 7.5L/100km (7.4L/100km for the IL6).

Every CX-60 powertrain uses an eight-speed ‘Skyactiv Drive’ automatic transmission.
The G25 powertrain has been available in other countries since the CX-60 first launched. Subsequently, Mazda Australia has been winding back some aspects of its premium pricing strategy on various models, including the CX-60. Part of the reasoning is that it needs to meet Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) in the future.
Mazda Australia expects the new entry powertrain to comprise one-third of CX-60 sales eventually.
Earlier this year Mazda added a Pure grade to the CX-60 line-up with less equipment and more down-to-earth interior trimmings.

Standard kit for the CX-60 G25 Pure includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, AEB, and a surround camera. There’s also a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless phone hook up, front/rear parking sensors, and satellite navigation.
It comes with manually adjusted cloth seats and a DIY tailgate.
A higher spec Evolve version adds a 12.3-inch digital driver display, black vinyl seat upholstery, a wireless phone charger, and a powered tailgate. Other gear includes upgraded adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, front cross traffic alert, and a driver monitor.
The Touring grade adds black leather upholstery, heated and powered front seats, memory for the mirrors, and an LED-lit rear console.
Options are limited to paint colour. We have asked Mazda New Zealand whether the G25 model is coming to New Zealand. They replied: “As our equipment and powertrain strategy differs to what is available in other markets, there are no plans to include the 2.5 litre Skyactiv-G engine in the New Zealand range.”
