Mazda confirms new electric 6e for New Zealand in 2026

Mazda has officially confirmed its all-new electric offering, the Mazda 6e, will arrive in New Zealand in the second half of 2026. Mazda reckons it will give local buyers a new EV option that ‘blends classic Mazda design values with a fully electric power’.

First unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show earlier this year, the 6e is already offered in major European markets and marks the brand’s ‘most significant electric passenger-car launch to date’. It hasn’t had many though, the MX-30 being a flop.

Mazda New Zealand managing director David Hodge says the new model builds on the strong reputation the Mazda6 has earned over two decades on Kiwi roads.

“All generations of the Mazda6 have been held in high regard in New Zealand. The model is known for striking design, superb comfort and high levels of driving enjoyment. The Mazda 6e continues this theme whilst offering new levels of technology and a dynamic EV powertrain to our customers.”

Sleek new-era Kodo design

The 6e debuts the latest evolution of Mazda’s “Kodo: Soul of Motion” design language, bringing smoother surfaces, sharper proportions and a premium, coupe-inspired silhouette. A low roofline and short-deck profile create a sporty stance while retaining the practicality of a five-door hatchback.

Design highlights include a bold new lighting signature, flush integrated door handles, frameless doors and a distinctive quad-element tail-light arrangement. An electric rear spoiler further emphasises the car’s aerodynamic focus.

Driver-first philosophy

Mazda says the 6e’s chassis and steering have been engineered to deliver the trademark “Jinba-Ittai” connection between car and driver. A centred cockpit layout and new ergonomic seating aim to boost comfort and control on long and short trips alike.

The brand claims every element—from suspension tuning to cabin ergonomics—has been refined to deliver the precise handling and intuitive feel that Mazda owners expect, only now powered by a next-generation electric drivetrain.

A new electric chapter

While technical details for NZ are still TBC, in Europe it is offered with a 68kWh and 80kWh battery, offering WLTP range figures of 479km and 552km respectively. It has a 400v architecture and delivers 190kW and 320Nm, the single motor driving the rear wheels. It’s a big car, measuring 4921mm in length with 456L of boot space.

Mazda NZ says it is positioning the 6e as a bridge between its combustion-engine heritage and its electrified future. The company says the car “marks a bold step into the electric future while staying true to the craftsmanship and aesthetic excellence that define the Mazda brand.”

Pricing and local specification for New Zealand will be announced nearer to the model’s 2026 arrival.
