Liam Lawson receives apology from FIA regarding Mexico GP incident

Kiwi Formula 1 star Liam Lawson has received an official apology from the FIA regarding an incident with a pair of track marshalls at the Mexico GP.

The incident saw a pair of track marshalls rush onto the track to remove debris, unaware of the fact Lawson was approaching at speed.

According to Lawson, the F1’s governing body reached out to him, and privately apologised for the situation after the race.

Contradicting this, Mexico’s motorsport federation, OMDAI, put the blame squarely on Lawson, stating he failed to slow sufficiently under yellow flags.

“I was very surprised when it came out,” he told reporters at Interlagos ahead of this weekend’s Sao Paulo GP.

“I think the FIA statement was very clear and very accurate as well. I don’t really need to say too much more than what was put in that statement.”

Unsurprisingly, Lawson also revealed that he was “very surprised” when the OMDAI statement was released, but didn’t comment further on the federation’s findings.

He also added that he understands the incident was caused by a breakdown in communication at the track.

Lawson’s attention now turns to the Sao Paulo GP, an extremely important race for him that could secure his future in Formula 1.

Considering Red Bull’s continued commitment to Verstappen, there are four drivers vying for three seats.

The Interlagos will give Lawson a good chance to prove his worth, considering the season-best qualifying position he secured at the same race last year.
