Kia EV6 GT Updated For Even More Speed

Kia’s EV6 GT is a jet but now it’s going supersonic with even more power (478kW, up from 430kW) and torque (770Nm, up from 740Nm) when in GT mode. The former model could rocket to 100 in a claimed 3.5sec, 3.3sec by our reckoning. The update should be even quicker, though Kia isn’t saying by how much just yet. Expect at least a tenth off though. So for longitudinal acceleration, expect it to be neck and neck with Ioniq 5 N and Tesla Model 3 Performance.

But of as much interest is the fact that it will pick up Ioniq 5 N’s ‘Virtual Gear Shift’ system. That adjusts the car’s torque output to deliver a small jolt and create the impression of a gear change when you use the paddles on the steering wheel. 

It also includes a synthesised ICE-esque soundtrack that livens up the cabin. The noise lifts as the motor spins up and the driver activates the upshift paddle. Both of these features can be switched off if you tire of the faux shifts and noises and just want the conventional electric car silent drive experience. 

It seems unlikely that the EV6 GT will get the Ioniq 5 N’s stiffer suspension components, meaning if ride quality is more important than cornering skills then the Kia is probably the better choice. 

Another update for the EV6 GT is a new 84kWh battery, up from 77.4kWh previously. That’s going into all EV6s but the base model. It should result in a comprehensive improvement in range. For the GT that’s currently 425km, and with the new battery range should close to 500km.

Expect the same styling changes as those in the regular EV6 with ‘Star Map’ DRLs and a front end inspired by the flagship EV9. Inside is a new three-spoke steering wheel, and updated infotainment software with wireless smartphone integration.
