KGM teases new Musso ute

KGM Musso in the shadows

KGM has dropped the first teaser of its next-generation ute, signalling the end of the current Musso and the arrival of a more modern challenger to the Ford Ranger.

A short video published on the Korean brand’s YouTube channel shows the dual-cab from multiple angles, revealing a squarer, blockier silhouette than before. While it retains the Musso’s bolt-upright C-pillar and separate tray, the styling has clearly moved towards a more rugged and contemporary direction.

At the front, segmented LED daytime running lights – similar to those on the upcoming Musso EV – are linked by C-shaped elements that frame the headlights in a style not unlike the Ford Ranger or BYD Shark 6. The rear gets a sculpted tailgate with an embossed KGM badge, flanked by simplified vertical tail-lamps. Other touches include vertical indicators integrated into the front wheel arches and two-tone alloy wheels.

KGM hasn’t shown the cabin yet, nor has it confirmed specifications. Diesel is expected to remain the core powertrain, though you’d expect some kind of hybrid option is in the works.

The new ute will continue to use the Musso nameplate, which KGM earlier this year committed to developing as a dedicated sub-brand. First used on an SUV in 1993, “Musso” means rhinoceros in Korean.

The current Musso, based on the Rexton SUV platform, launched in 2017 and ranges in price from $45k for the entry level 4×4 auto, to $55k for the Musso Grand Adventure.

KGM’s upcoming ute will have plenty of competitors to battle it out with in a rapidly expanding segment full of new Chinese nameplates.  Expect more details, including powertrain options and launch timing, in the coming months.
