Another Jaecoo, a compact SUV, fronted at Goodwood recently and will initially be available with petrol power alone. Expect an electric variant of the J5 at some point, however.

Up against the likes of myriad compact SUVs from Japan, China and Europe, it will arrive initially with a 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine.
Every example comes with a 13.2-inch touchscreen, surround cameras, and a Sony sound system. Our initial news item also suggested it has pet-friendly features.
A pair of J5s
Two specification levels are dubbed Pure and Luxury. Pure models get that portrait touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker stereo and automatic headlights. Luxury adds extra speakers, cooled wireless phone charging, heated and ventilated front seats with power operation, and flasher interior trim, along with ambient lighting. Luxury also comes with an opening glass roof.

Two power options
The Jaecoo 5 will eventually be offered with an electric motor, and around 400km of range, similar to the likes of Jeep Avenger. That said, some rivals like Kia EV3 and Skoda Elroq can manage almost 600km. But you’ll likely pay more for these.
Expect the same powertrain as Omoda E5. That comes with a 61kWh battery, a 150kW front-mounted e-motor and 80kW maximum charging speed.

Opt for the combustion version of the J5 and the 1.6L turbopetrol outputs 108kW and 275Nm of torque. It too uses a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A hybrid that employs the same engine but with assistance from an electric motor is in the wings.
Styling is like a compact J7
The styling of the Jaecoo 5 is similar to that of the Jaecoo 7, also featuring the ‘waterfall’ grille. However, the front end is less upright on the J5, while the headlights and bumper are simplified. Opt for electric and the Jaecoo 5 BEV has a blanked-off front end with a different bumper design, aiding aerodynamics and range.

Inside, the Jaecoo 5 features a portrait touchscreen that flows into the centre console, and a slim instrument panel. Figure also on a two-spoke steering wheel, a column-mounted gear selector, ambient lighting and virtually no physical buttons.
We have asked Omoda-Jaecoo whether the J5 is coming to New Zealand and they replied that no decision has been made as yet.
