Hyundai concept car points to small electric crossover

Another concept car is being teased ahead of the upcoming Munich Motor Show. This time it’s a “forward-thinking” concept car from Hyundai. It will likely go up against the Renault 4, Ford’s Puma Gen-E and Volvo EX30. Think of it as an electric version of Bayon, for size at least.

This is the Hyundai Bayon.

So far, the company has just issued three teaser images that offer glimpses of the mystery concept car. Up front is a sharp nose with slim headlights, like on the new Ioniq 6 saloon. The grille is seemingly covered in myriad pixel LED lights, a styling element of the brand’s EVs since the Ioniq 5 launched four years ago. There’s also a thin LED bar up front. At the rear, the concept has a sloping roofline, prominent wheelarches and a sizeable bootlip spoiler.

Hyundai added that “steel can evolve into something unexpected” as part of the social media teaser. This refers to the ‘Art of Steel’ design language that features on the new Nexo and Santa Fe.

Hyundai’s hydrogen-powered Nexo features Art of Steel styling cues.

Whatever it looks like as a concept, expect the finished article to be much the same, if history is any indication. This new concept previews an electric crossover that’s due out next year. Auto Express says it is probably the Hyundai Ioniq 2. This slips in between the Inster city car and the Kona Electric SUV. Think of it as the sister car to Kia’s EV2, also due out next year.

It too will ride on Hyundai’s scalable E-GMP platform and will probably have around 480km of range. That’s more than Renault 4 and Ford Puma Gen-E rivals can muster. Expect battery packs and motors to be similar to those used in EV3.

Sales will begin in the second half of next year.
