Honda Unveils Supercharged Three-Pot Concept

Honda has shown off a four-stroke 75-degree V3 powerplant equipped with an electrical compressor that gives a marked torque boost in the low- to mid-rev range. It is designed for larger motorcycles as a more fuel efficient but still potent powertrain.

Honda says its compact dimensions imbue it with significant new model potential. And it says development will continue. The Japanese firm also showed off a pair of electric two-wheelers at the 2024 EICMA show.

Little is known about details of the engine although it is likely to be a liquid-cooled dohc four valve per cylinder design with a displacement of around 850cc. The V3 engine features “the world’s first electrical compressor for motorcycles”. The device is said to be capable of controlling compression of the intake air irrespective of engine rpm. The upshot is high-response torque even at relatively low engine speeds.

Another advantage of the electrical compressor is that it permits a high degree of layout freedom for remaining components in the limited space available on a motorcycle. It also helps with efficient mass centralization. An electrical compressor also has no need of an intercooler.

It has been a while since Honda has offered a V3 for the road, the last bike way back in the mid-80s when it sold its two-stroke NS400R. 

Honda says development of this concept will continue towards a mass production model. Hopefully something like a VFR3. 

And on a related tangent, both bikes, Honda has shown off two new electric models that it will bring to market next year.

The EV Fun Concept is the brand’s first crack at a sporty electric motorcycle. It is a naked bike with an inbuilt battery. The EV Urban Concept as described on the tin, is an electric motorcycle (more of a maxiscooter really) for the city. Its battery pack was also developed by the company. Honda plans to have 30 electric models on sale by 2030 as part of its carbon neutral pathway to 2040.

In both of these bikes the traditional engine is replaced by a battery pack.

Honda reckons the EV Fun model won’t be too heavy and will ride in agile fashion. Its battery will be compatible with a CCS2 quick charger, just like with an electric four-wheeler. It should also have quick charging performance, and range is expected to be in excess of 100km.
