Great Wall Motor (GWM) has confirmed that its new seven-seater, the Tank 500, will be sold in New Zealand.

When it arrives in the second quarter of this year, the SUV will become the brand’s new range-topper and promises to be its most luxurious model yet.

Two variants of the Tank 500 will be offered locally, including the Lux and Ultra, which are priced from $74,990 and $82,990 respectively.

As standard with the Lux, it will come with a faux leather interior, a 14.6-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, three-zone climate control, and various driver assistance features like a 350 degree surround view camera, as well as front and rear parking sensors.

Stepping into the Ultra, you’ll find that Nappa leather clads each seat, with the two up front gaining heating, ventilation, massaging, and memory functions. In addition, the highly appointed variant will be equipped with a 12-speaker sound system from Infinity along with a host of other upgrades.

Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid powerplant that produces 255kW and 648Nm of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic. Towing capacity comes to 3000kg braked and 750kg unbraked.

GWM reports a fuel economy figure of 8.5L/100km, while the tank can hold up to 80 litres of petrol.

Following in the footsteps of its baby Tank 300 sibling, the Tank 500 is said to be a true off-roader with its selectable four-wheel drive system, low-range gearing, rear differential lock, 11 driving modes, and underbody protection.

The top model also boasts 224mm of ground clearance, 30-degree approach, 22.5-degree breakover, and 24-degree departure angles, while also being able to wade through water up to 800mm deep.
