GWM will add another PHEV to its local ranks soon with the Tank 500 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid. It is set to launch in New Zealand later this year. Positioned as the brand’s flagship luxury SUV, GWM says it combines off-road capability with class-leading EV range.
The Tank 500 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid is the fourth new PHEV GWM will introduce in 2025, following hybrid versions of the H6GT, Cannon Alpha and H6, and the third model to feature the brand’s Hi4 hybrid architecture. Unlike the Hi4 system used in lighter SUVs, the Hi4-T setup has been engineered specifically for ‘heavy-duty’ applications, pairing a turbo-petrol engine with a 120kW electric motor and mechanical four-wheel drive.

Together, the 2.0-litre turbo and electric motor deliver 300kW and 750Nm, channelled through a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission and torque-on-demand 4WD. That’s said to be good for 0–100km/h in 6.9 seconds, while combined fuel use is 2.1L/100km according to lab tests, real world consumption figures will be vastly different however if you fail to recharge often. But the Tank 500 PHEV has up to 120km of pure-electric driving ability says GWM. A 37.1kWh battery provides a total range of 950km, while fast charging can replenish from 30–80 percent in a claimed 24 minutes. Vehicle-to-load functionality adds off-grid flexibility.
True to its Tank badge, the 500 Hi4-T doesn’t skimp on off-road hardware. It offers up to three locking differentials, low-range gearing, 213mm of ground clearance, and a wading depth of 800mm. Towing capacity is rated at 3,000kg.

Inside, the seven-seat layout has been replaced by a more luxurious five-seat arrangement to accommodate the larger battery. Rear passengers gain heated, ventilated and massaging seats with their own touchscreen interface. Up front, drivers get a 14.6-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside premium features such as three-zone climate control, LED lighting, and a suite of driver assistance systems.
The Tank 500 Hi4-T will be backed by GWM’s seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and eight years on the battery. Pricing and final NZ specifications will be confirmed at the official launch in the coming weeks.
