This eye-catching Genesis Wingback wagon concept is just that at this stage. And if it was to get the green light for production, it won’t be coming here at any stage either. But it is pretty cool.
The brand’s president and chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke has been reported as saying he wants to put it on the road. “I get feedback that high-power wagons are not that cool outside of Germany, but if you look at the success of competitors on the U.S. market, that tells me the opposite,” he says. While fast wagons remain a niche globally, Genesis believes its growing low-volume, coachbuilt capabilities could give the Wingback a genuine production pathway. Both concepts were designed from day one to be feasible, relatively affordable builds rather than pie-in-the-sky showpieces.
Platform
Underneath the Wingback’s dramatic surfacing sits the same architecture as the Genesis G90 luxury sedan. The wagon share the G90’s 3180mm wheelbase and its overall length, along with identical hardpoints such as suspension locations, cowl height, seating layout and fuel tank position.

It’s said that the G90 platform is being rigged to offer a high-performance Magma variant. It’s likely to gain extra stiffness and bespoke suspension components to sharpen steering feel, response and high-speed stability. While an up-tick in performance is key, it is said that Genesis wants the Magma-tuned G90 to remain quiet and luxurious as well.
Powertrain
The Wingback would likely inherit a worked version of the G90’s 3.5-litre twin-turbo and electrically supercharged V6. In stock form it produces 305kW, which is a way of the German bruisers mentioned. Reaching that territory will require far more than ECU tweaks – which may explain why one Genesis insider hinted a new V8 could be under development specifically for high-end Magma models.

Magma
Donckerwolke is keen to stress that Magma isn’t purely about flamboyant styling and brute power. Instead, he sees it as the natural bridge between Genesis’ most dynamic production models and the ultra-exclusive One-of-One programme, which currently serves customers in the Middle East.
Future
The Wingback concept also signals Genesis’ view that the performance-SUV boom may eventually peak. When it does, the brand expects enthusiasts to start gravitating back to lower, lighter, more engaging body styles that still offer usable practicality.
