Geely undercuts competition and throws in a few perks

Geely EX5

Geely Auto has officially launched its all-new EX5, a mid-sized all-electric SUV now available for pre-order in New Zealand, at the very least matching its closest competitors on price.

Introductory pricing starts at $51,990 plus on-road costs, with first deliveries scheduled from 14 April.

Two trims are on offer: the Complete, priced from $51,990, and the range-topping Inspire, priced from $55,990. Both variants offer a competitive range of up to 430 kilometres (WLTP) and come with extensive equipment, including a 15.4-inch touchscreen, powered and heated front seats, and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.

How does that compare to the competition? The BYD Atto 3 currently lists at $55,990, while the Leapmotor C10 is priced at $54,990. Both models are more expensive than the Complete trim, though closer to the Inspire in specification.

BYD Auto NZ quickly reacted by introducing an ‘Essential’ version of the Atto 3 priced at $49,990.

We have already driven the EX5 and found it to be a very mature first effort, showcasing high build quality, generous space, and a premium focus on materials and comfort.

Jordan Haines, Geely New Zealand Brand Manager, describes the EX5 as one of the most affordable EVs in its segment. This pricing is not limited-time; however, the launch offer of a three-year (or 60,000 km) scheduled service plan and free metallic paint valued at $950 is available for a limited period.

Underpinning this value proposition are a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre battery warranty, seven years of complimentary roadside assistance, and two years of connected car data.

Key details

Built on Geely’s advanced GEA platform, the EX5 produces 160 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque from a front-mounted electric motor, with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) capabilities, providing practical ways to charge external devices or even top up other electric vehicles. Both Complete and Inspire trims incorporate a comprehensive suite of safety features, including seven airbags, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, and multiple collision-avoidance systems. Inside, a cutting-edge 7 nm chip delivers rapid navigation and onboard apps such as Spotify, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality will be enabled via an over-the-air update by the end of 2025.

Geely has invested more than 12 months in local calibration and evaluation of the EX5 on New Zealand and Australian roads. This testing focused on suspension tuning, advanced driver-assistance systems calibration, and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) refinement, ensuring the vehicle’s electric powertrain, steering, and ride quality suit local conditions and driver preferences.

New dealership

Test drives of the EX5 will be available from 15 April at Giltrap Geely Auckland—opening the previous day at 45 Great North Road, in the former Lexus building—and at a delivery centre at Giltrap Christchurch on Waterloo Road, with further dealership locations to be announced soon.

Prospective buyers can visit Geely.nz for more information or to secure a pre-order.
