Chinese carmaker GAC has confirmed its official entry into the New Zealand market, announcing a December 2025 launch with three models covering petrol, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric powertrains.
The Guangzhou Automobile Group Motor Co., China’s fifth-largest vehicle manufacturer, produces more than two million vehicles annually and operates globally under three brands; Aion, GAC Trumpchi, and Hyptec. All vehicles sold here, however, will be marketed under the single GAC nameplate.
Three-model range confirmed
Leading the launch lineup is the Aion V (above), a mid-size electric SUV powered by a 150kW motor and offering up to 510km of WLTP range. The SUV’s 75kWh battery can be DC fast-charged from 30–80 per cent in just 24 minutes, while its 0–100km/h time of 7.9 seconds puts it in line with rivals such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and BYD Atto 3 Extended Range.

Next up is the GS3 Emzoom (above), a compact petrol SUV powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The powertrain produces 125kW and 270Nm, offering a more conventional choice for Kiwi buyers who still prefer combustion engines.
Rounding out the initial trio is the M8, a luxurious seven-seat plug-in hybrid people mover. It combines a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric drive system for a total output of 274kW and 630Nm. A 25.57kWh battery provides up to 106km of electric-only range (WLTC), positioning it as a premium alternative to the likes of Toyota’s Alphard or Kia Carnival HEV.
More models on the way
GAC says it will expand its local lineup in 2026 with three additional models, though details remain under wraps.
The company’s arrival adds further depth to the growing list of Chinese automakers entering New Zealand, joining BYD, MG, and GWM as competition heats up in the low-emission vehicle segment driven by the country’s Clean Car Standard.
Pricing and full local specifications for the Aion V, GS3 Emzoom, and M8 will be confirmed ahead of the December launch.
