New Zealand’s EV market is about to get yet another new player, with Dongfeng Motor confirming it will be arriving here later this year.
Described as one of China’s “Big Four” automakers, Dongfeng reportedly produces more than 2.5 million vehicles annually and operates in over 100 countries.
The brand has appointed Armstrong’s Distribution Limited as its exclusive distributor in New Zealand, with retail outlets to open in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, followed by additional stores nationwide.

Dongfeng’s local line-up will debut with three fully electric models; the Box, Vigo and 007. These are said to be designed to deliver urban practicality, family versatility and strong performance.
Exact specifications and pricing will be confirmed closer to launch, but the company says the focus is on affordability, innovation and advanced safety systems, with driving ranges to suit both city commuters and long-distance travellers.

According to the Dongfeng global website, the Box has a battery capacity of 42.3kWh and a max speed of 140 km/h. Range is quoted at 430km but tested on the CLTC regime. Model highlights include “super cute” front styling, frameless doors and hidden door handles. The front seats come with a one-touch reclining mode, there are hidden storage compartments about the cabin and wireless phone charging features.
Vigo is a 4.3m long compact SUV with a 51.5kWh battery but other highlights aren’t listed. The 007 in top spec guise had 375kW and 730Nm, good for a 0 to 100 time in 3.8 seconds. It has a powered liftback and ‘a large trunk capacity’, active spoilers and something called a Silicone Baby-grade high quality interior.

Armstrong’s founder and Executive Director Rick Armstrong says Dongfeng’s arrival will make premium-quality EVs more accessible to Kiwi buyers.
“These vehicles combine world-class engineering with cutting-edge technology, all at a price point that makes premium quality more accessible than ever. We’re all about removing barriers and delivering vehicles which are a dream to drive.”

Simon Rutherford, CEO of Armstrong’s Distribution, says the launch is aimed squarely at Kiwi buyers looking for attainable EVs without compromise.
“We’re confident Dongfeng offers qualities and attributes that motorists demand. It’s a future-focused and progressive marque which fulfils what Kiwis have been dreaming about driving — a range of attractive, attainable vehicles designed to revolutionise the way New Zealanders interact with and experience next-generation mobility.”
Dongfeng’s New Zealand debut is set for Q4 2025, with more details on the Box, Vigo and 007 models to follow in the coming weeks.
