BYD Seagull coming Down Under?
While prices of electric vehicles have been falling recently, it’s more to do with local distributors needing to clear stock. Sales hit the skids with the removal of rebates and the introduction of RUCs by the current government, though price reductions have slowly been reinvigorating interest.
Those hanging out for even more affordable offerings, like the Seagull, BYD’s small hatch, might have to wait a bit longer however.
Over in Australia, BYD’s local distributor, EV Direct confirmed to media it will offer a sub-Dolphin model in that market, which likely means the introduction of the Seagull, referred to as the Dolphin Mini in other overseas markets.
He also said BYD Australia would expand in the other direction, looking for a large SUV to fill its ranks, but Smitherman couldn’t confirm whether the Halo sports car, like the Yangwang U9, is on the table. The BYD subs brands Denza and YangWang have also been confirmed for Australia.
However, BYD Automotive New Zealand country manager Warren Willmot has reiterated that the brand will launch 15 new models over the next 24 months, placing a vehicle in each market segment. But Willmot says it is unlikely that New Zealand will see the BYD Seagull/Dolphin Mini in 2025.
BYD has sold 115 Dolphins here in NZ this year, while 116 Seals have been registered.
