– Patent images show a car-based “lifestyle” pick-up is set to join the Shark 6
Chinese automaker BYD appears ready to expand its ute lineup, with new patent images revealing a smaller, more car-like pick-up that will sit below the Shark 6.

Filed with European intellectual property regulators and uncovered by Car News China, the designs show a dual-cab ute that shares clear styling cues with the BYD Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV. The new model looks to adopt a monocoque construction rather than the ladder-frame chassis used by the Shark 6.

The images show a shorter, integrated load tub, further hinting that this is a “lifestyle” ute aimed at urban and suburban buyers. The front end is unique but carries some resemblance to the Sealion 5, while the taillights echo the Shark 6’s design.

BYD’s new ute is expected to use the brand’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system, pairing a 1.5-litre petrol engine with one or two electric motors.
Although registered in Europe, a region where utes are niche, the move could signal future availability in right-hand-drive markets, including Australia and New Zealand, where BYD’s model lineup closely mirrors its European offerings.

Given BYD’s naming convention, the new model could wear a Shark 3 or Shark 4 badge, complementing the larger Shark 6.
The new BYD pick-up is expected to make its debut sometime in 2026.
