BMW’s Electric M3 Will Be Known As iM3

AutoExpress has published shots of the next-generation BMW M3 super-saloon, still in disguise (above is a render). BMW suggests it is “on the way to set new standards.” Oh, and it’s electric.

The hot-shot electric four-door is clearly based on the Neue Klasse 3 Series that is due out in 2026. Obvious differences include wider wheel arches for extra track, and deeper side skirts. 

The graphics around each wheel suggest a quad-motor powertrain. By contrast, standard 3 Series EVs will get single- or dual-motor set-ups. BMW technicians had already let slip that the ECU was designed to oversee four electric motors with up to 1000kW of power. It looks after stability control, the powertrain and battery operation along with chassis software. Apparently the ECU will “unlock new dynamic abilities”.

It will also allow the car to decelerate at up to 1G or more, while recuperating energy and having the appropriate stability. BMW says you will be able to drive this car “in a way you never have before”.

While the ECU can handle the 1000kW of power from a quartet of motors, the iM3 might not get that much grunt. It is the vehicle dynamics that will define how electric M cars drive, differentiating them for their rivals. BMW is also working on acoustic feedback for its electric M offerings.

We already know that the so-called iM3 will utilise the Neue Klasse platform. It may be on sale as soon as 2027, soon after the Neue Klasse 3 Series debuts. Whether or not an M3 Touring makes the grade is unclear.

Evidently a new petrol-powered M3 will sit alongside the all-electric model. The current 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine already complies with Euro 7 emissions regulations. So the M3 will likely overlap with the all-electric model arriving in 2027.

BMW iM3 will duke it out with Tesla Model 3 Performance. It will also come up against a warm version of the next-generation Mercedes CLA saloon. A production variant of the Lexus LF-ZC concept is also due in the next few years. Moreover, Alfa will no doubt prepare a QV version of its electric Giulia.
