In order to catch more heinous criminals out on the road, the NZTA’s new average speed safety cameras are set to go live from December. The revenue collecting arm of the agency is alerting people to look out for this sign (above). It says; ‘these signs will be before the camera area so you know when they’re ahead, giving you time to check you’re travelling at a legal speed. Some cameras are over a long stretch of road, so we’ll have extra signs along the way.’
The first camera to go live will be on Matakana Road, north of Auckland.

According to the agency; ‘Average speed safety cameras measure how long it takes you to travel between two cameras along a road. We set two or more cameras on a stretch of road, some distance apart. When you pass the first camera it records the time. When you pass the second camera it records the time again. We calculate how long it took you to travel between the cameras (your average speed). If your average speed is over the speed limit – in other words, if you’ve travelled between the cameras too quickly – expect to be fined.’
