Mercedes-AMG has officially launched its new E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ in New Zealand (E 53), bringing electrified performance and reduced fuel use. The latest E-Class performance sedan features AWD and all-wheel steering as part of the luxury and tech package.

At the heart of this PHEV is a 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged engine, working in tandem with a 120kW electric motor. The latter is integrated into the AMG 53’s Speedshift TCT 9G transmission. Its total system output is 480kW and 750Nm, capable of launching the E 53 from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds.
With its 28.6kWh high-voltage battery, the E 53 can run on electric power alone for up to 100km. Overall fuel efficiency of 1.7L/100km (rightcar 1.9) contrasts with the outgoing model’s 9.2L/100km figure.
Visually, the E 53 Hybrid features AMG styling cues that include a vertical-slat grille, bulked-up front guards, aggressive air intakes, and an AMG spoiler lip.

Twenty-inch alloys are standard while optional 21-inch forged wheels add road presence. Hybrid-specific badging reveals its electrified nature. Available dress up options include for the AMG Night Package and Carbon Fibre Package.

The cabin fuses E-Class elements with AMG sports flair. Cue climatised AMG sports seats, nappa leather, and open-pore ash trim as standard. Performance seats are also available. The standard MBUX Superscreen includes a 14.4-inch central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch passenger display, and custom AMG graphics with hybrid-specific readouts. Other standard items include Active Ambient Lighting, a Burmester 4D audio system, and four-zone climate control.

Standard AMG Ride Control suspension is specially tuned for the hybrid’s extra weight and performance potential. It pairs steel springs with adaptive damping, and there are various ride/handling modes, ending in Sport+. Two new driving modes are “Electric”, for zero-emissions cruising, and “Battery Hold”, which conserves electric range for later urban use. There’s also Race Start, for optimal acceleration.

AMG’s AWD system ensures stern grip, and there’s standard rear-wheel steering for added agility and stability at slow and higher speeds, respectively. Bigger composite brakes, red calipers, and an electronic locking rear diff locking are part of the AMG Dynamic Plus package.

Owners can option their E 53 with the AMG Performance Seat Package ($5000) offering greater lateral support. Energizing Package Plus ($5300) adds heated armrests, seat massage functions, and a cabin fragrance system.
The E 53 Hybird 4MATIC+ is on sale now, from $199,900.
