A few more details about the updated Tesla Model Y

Words by NZ Autocar magazine

The updated Tesla Model Y is now available to order via the firm’s website.

Tesla has never been forthcoming with specifics, especially around motor output and battery capacity. But the Internet has sourced these details via a new Chinese government filing.

Via its application for certification in China, Tesla confirmed the base RWD features a ‘3D6’ electric motor with an output of 220kW (no torque figure confirmed however) while the battery is a 62.5kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack. The range is stated at 466km WLTP, or up 11km on the old model.

The Dual Motor model has a 137kW ‘3D3’ electric unit on the front axle with 194kW ‘3D7’ unit on the rear. That makes for a total output of 331kW. It has a 78.4kWh NMC battery pack giving a claimed WLTP range of 551km. Its stated 0-100km/h time has been reduced from 5.0 seconds to 4.3 seconds.

The dimensions of the updated Model Y are 4797mm long (+46mm) while it’s the same 1920mm wide and 1624mm tall. Kerb weight is between 1921kg and 1992kg, depending on the variant.

The upgraded Model Y will arrive in ‘Launch Series’ guise from May 2025.

As a reminder, new Model Y features are

• Front and rear lightbars designed to increase aerodynamics, efficiency, and range.
• Refined interior with customisable wrap-around interior lighting, soft-touch finishes, a 15.4-inch touchscreen and ventilated front seats.
• Power-reclining second-row seats that fold flat, plus an eight-inch Bluetooth-enabled rear touchscreen.
• Acoustic glass keeps road noise out and your music in.
• Updated suspension offers smoother handling, added comfort, more responsive steering, and a quieter ride.

Unlike the updated Model 3, the new Model Y ‘provides effortless control with a precision-engineered indicator stalk’. Apparently this was ‘thoughtfully refined based on valuable customer feedback’. Translation: the indicator buttons on the Model 3 are rubbish to use.
