Is this the new MG4? 

Images of a new MG4 have surfaced out of China. It looks like MG’s hatchback has taken a big step forward, with a completely new design revealed through Chinese regulatory filings. It seems this is not just a mild refresh, as this is a larger car than the current model, hinting that MG has decided to start from scratch in a bid to revive sales in China, where the MG4 struggles against its primary competition.  

Bigger in Every Direction

The new MG4 measures 4395mm in length, 1842mm in width, and 1551mm in height, with a wheelbase stretched to 2750 mm. Compared to the outgoing model (4,287 mm long with a 2,705 mm wheelbase), that’s a notable increase—108 mm longer overall, with a 45 mm longer wheelbase.

The redesign extends beyond dimensions. MG has reworked the front and rear styling, reshaped the doors, and rethought the greenhouse. The new design draws influence from the MG3  while adding styling cues from the Cyberster.

A Sportier Rear End

Around the back, the new MG4 now features a full-width light bar, with arrow-shaped taillights reminiscent of the Cyberster. The more aggressive styling gives it a sharper presence, moving it away from its predecessor’s more conventional hatchback look.

Power and Performance

Under the skin, the new MG4 is powered by a 120kW TZ180XS1001 electric motor. It’s also shed some weight—coming in at 1485 kg, it’s significantly lighter than the outgoing model, which had a 125 kW motor but tipped the scales at 1641 kg.

Battery details remain under wraps for now, but we do know it will feature a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack supplied by Rept Battero Energy.

A Confusing Name Game

Adding to the intrigue, MG has filed applications for two additional badges for this model—MG3 and E5. Whether this is an intentional move to keep competitors guessing or simply an internal naming debate remains to be seen.

Fighting for a Place in China’s Brutal EV Market

Despite its overseas success, the MG4 has struggled to gain traction in China. Sales started strong after its mid-2022 launch, but momentum quickly faded. The Chinese EV market is fiercely competitive, with entry-level rivals like the BYD Dolphin, Wuling Bingo, and Geely Xingyuan making life tough. Just how bad is it? In February, MG4 sales in China plunged to a mere 13 units. MG will be hoping this new, larger MG4 can turn things around.
