2024 Suzuki Swift unveiled in Japan with hybrid power

One of New Zealand’s all-time favourite hatchbacks has been given a big update, with the covers quietly being pulled off the new 2024 Suzuki Swift in Japan.

It comes as no surprise that the next-generation model looks exactly like the concept we saw at the start of October ahead of its debut at the Japan Mobility Show.

However, Suzuki didn’t dive too deep into the nitty-gritty details of the new Swift, but it has confirmed the model will feature a mild hybrid system in conjunction with a newly developed 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). In Japan, the model will be offered with front- and all-wheel drive.

The hatchback’s design remains faithful to its predecessor’s but there are new headlights and taillights, a reshaped front grille that now sits under the Suzuki badge, a clamshell bonnet, and a defined beltline.

Another notable difference between the old and new Swift is a relocated rear door handle from the C-pillar to the door itself.

Based on the concept’s dimensions, the hatch measures 3860mm long, 1695mm wide, 1500mm tall, and has a 2450mm long wheelbase.

Inside, the dashboard has been given a rework, with the nine-inch infotainment screen being repositioned higher than previously. The system itself comes with satellite navigation, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

The new Swift also waves goodbye to the manual handbrake in favour of an electric parking brake, and will come with a hold function that keeps the vehicle stationary without having to press the brake pedal.

Some of its safety features include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive high beams, a driver monitoring system, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, a surround-view camera, blind spot monitoring, and more.

Suzuki New Zealand has yet to outline any pricing and specifications for the new model, but said at a recent launch that Swift will arrive here midway through 2024.
