Lexus is preparing to make a small but mighty splash on our shores early next year, with the recently-revealed LBX set to join the Lexus New Zealand lineup as its smallest model ever to go on sale.

Based on the same platform that underpins the Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross, the Japanese carmaker says its new crossover SUV offers customers an accessible path to owning a luxury vehicle by becoming the brand’s new entry-level model under the UX.

Measuring in at 4190mm in length, 1825mm wide, and 1560mm tall, the LBX also wants to redefine the notion that luxury doesn’t always have to be big. That’s why it’s name stands for ‘Lexus Breakthrough X(cross)-over’ because, well, how many other luxury vehicles are this small?

The compact SUV will introduce a new grade system to the brand, with the model going on sale with three themes, each relating to a customer’s unique lifestyle and preferences.

As far as engines go, the LBX features the same 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol hybrid engine found in the Yaris and Yaris Cross, which is mated to a transaxle sending power to the front wheels. An all-wheel drive variant has also been confirmed overseas, but New Zealand availability isn’t known just yet.

Lexus has adorned the LBX with its ‘Unified Spindle’ front end design, while the rear features the brand’s W-shaped signature taillight.

The interior features a central 9.8-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch LCD display for the driver. Other features include ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, and other creature comforts and assists.

Lexus New Zealand expects the LBX to represent 15 per cent of its total sales once it lands in the first quarter of 2024. Pricing and specification has yet to be confirmed.
