The world’s most expensive Evo? Mitsubishi TME sells for $288,000

by Matthew Hansen
August 4, 2021

Those plotting the values of the collective of Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions will have been paying attention to Silverstone Auctions’ sale of one of the world’s neatest, tidiest Evolution 6.5 Tommi Makinen Editions over the weekend.

And, those people weren’t disappointed. Having been estimated to sell for between £115,000 and £125,000, the Passion Red turbofour ended up exceeding expectations, selling for £146,250 — or $288,740. Note that this price included the buyer’s premium.

Digging through the history books, it seems that the incredible auction makes this particular Evolution the most expensive production-car Lancer sale in history. We weren’t able to find any road-going models that have sold for north of $300,000, noting that Mitsubishi UK’s similarly exquisite example sold for around $200,000 in early May.

This Tommi Makinen Edition is serial number 001 out of 050 in this colour that were initially distributed in the UK. Combined with its 11,000 mile (17,702km) mileage, it’s likely one of the world’s most sought after Mitsubishis.

“This very special car has covered a fully verifiable 11,000 miles from new, supported by MOT and service records. It has had just two owners, the last since 2003. The car was previously lightly modified cosmetically under the bonnet, which has now all been rectified and returned to standard specification,” said Silverstone Auctions.

The world seemingly has Lancer Evolution fever at the moment, as the Silverstone Auctions listing closed another curious sought-after Lancer listing emerged — this one from Canada, of all places.

Baywest Mitsubishi in Ontario has dusted off what it purports to be the last ever Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution registered in Canada. It’s an Evo X ‘Final Edition’ model, one of just 350 sold in Canada and 3100 sold worldwide.

Apart from some different badging, the Final Edition got a set of BBS wheels, a black roof, and really not a lot else. Still, even though Evolution Xs are among the least sought after models in the Evolution discography, it’s standing as ‘the last one’ gives it heritage.

The dealer proudly exclaims that it only has 99km indicated on the odometer, and has priced the barely driven performance sedan at $147,899 CAD — or $167,400.
