– Affordable Chinese EV brand targets Kiwi drivers with value, range, and advanced tech
New Zealand’s electric vehicle market will soon see the arrival of Dongfeng Motor. Distributed locally by Armstrong’s, Dongfeng launches this month with three fully electric models – the compact Box, lifestyle-oriented Vigo, and performance-focused 007.
Founded over 56 years ago, Dongfeng sells more than 2.5 million vehicles annually in over 100 countries and partners globally with brands such as Honda, Nissan, Peugeot and Citroën. Its local debut is said to mark a major expansion for the marque. Dongfeng says it will bring Kiwis a range of high-tech, ‘affordably priced’ EVs backed by strong aftersales support: a six-year/200,000km vehicle warranty, six-year roadside assistance, and eight-year/200,000km battery warranty.

Armstrong’s Distribution CEO Simon Rutherford said “Dongfeng offers an affordable entry into the world of electrification with vehicles that provide a rewarding daily driving experience. Their character shines through a range of innovative features that bring a smile back to motoring and we are thrilled to be able to introduce these great vehicles from one of China’s largest auto-manufacturers so that more Kiwis can join the electric journey.”
“Dongfeng is an internationally renowned and respected name in making electric and low emission vehicles accessible for more people and has an established reputation and presence in more than 100 countries already.
“It is exciting that Kiwi motorists will now benefit from Dongfeng’s expertise when it comes to highly equipped, innovative technology and advanced ADAS features. The brand’s tagline is ‘Drive Your Dreams’ and these attainably priced new models will help enhance accessibility to ownership for Kiwi families who want to embrace the benefits of electrification.”

The Dongfeng Box
The smallest model in the lineup, the Dongfeng Box, is a compact five-door hatch designed for city living. With frameless doors, a floating two-tone roof, and hidden handles, it is said to have futuristic looks but remains practical, offering 317km of WLTP range and fast charging from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes.
Inside, Dongfeng says the Box features soft-touch finishes, 32-colour ambient lighting, and 945 litres of flexible cargo space. A 540-degree camera system, intelligent parking assist, and Level 2 driver assistance make it easy to manoeuvre in tight city spaces, they tell us.

The Dongfeng Vigo
Next up is the Dongfeng Vigo, a model that is said to blend SUV practicality with outdoors capability. Built on Dongfeng’s Quantum Architecture 3 platform, it features a 51kWh battery and a 340km WLTP range, producing 120kW of power. A 3C fast-charging system adds 114km of range in just five minutes apparently.
With Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, the Vigo can power household appliances like coffee machines or hairdryers while off-grid. The two-part tailgate doubles as a bench or table, while the flat-fold 2.0-metre bed and generous 500-litre boot make it perfect for road trips or weekend adventures.
Tech highlights include a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, an 8.8-inch instrument display, and 540-degree panoramic imaging with transparent chassis view for tricky terrain.

The Dongfeng 007
For enthusiasts, the sleek Dongfeng 007 delivers serious performance credentials. Available in RWD Long Range and AWD Performance variants, the latter produces a staggering 400kW and sprints from 0–100km/h in just 3.9 seconds.
Its aerodynamic coupe body (Cd 0.209) incorporates hidden handles, frameless doors, and a full-width light signature with animated welcome sequences. Inside, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, 19-speaker panoramic audio, and premium materials are said to elevate the cabin to luxury territory.
The 007’s range stretches to 520km WLTP in Long Range form, while ultra-fast charging replenishes 30–80 per cent in 26 minutes. Safety is reinforced through Dongfeng’s “four-dimensional battery protection”, offering resistance to fire, impact, and puncture, plus real-time thermal monitoring.
The first Dongfeng retail stores will open this month in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, with further locations to follow.
Pricing for the Box, Vigo, and 007 will be announced later in November, with first deliveries expected soon after.
