MG keen to highlight U9 key features ahead of NZ launch

MG is not far away from having its MGU9 ute on sale here in NZ. The Chinese manufacturer says it’s a model that is set to shake up the Kiwi ute market with a mix of toughness, technology and SUV-like refinement.

“We were determined not to compromise on driving comfort or capability,” said MG Motor NZ boss Dean Sheed. “Multi-link rear suspension is only the beginning of the MGU9 story. So many unique features from front to back enhance the experience. From its 2.5L Turbo diesel engine and ZF transmission, to our innovative two-step folding rear tail gate, that means better accessibility and safety for business or adventure use alike.

“Kiwis no longer have to choose between performance and refinement as the MGU9 really delivers the goods on all fronts.”

The MGU9 pairs a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and BorgWarner Super Select 4WD system. MG says the combination delivers smooth performance on-road and impressive traction off it. With a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, the MGU9 is built for both work and recreation.

Beneath the exterior sits hardware more often seen in 4×4 SUVs, including a rear multi-link suspension for improved comfort and handling.

Inside, the cabin adopts a more premium approach with heated and ventilated seats (including massage function on top models), dual 12.3-inch digital displays, and high-grade materials. MG claims the ute’s interior design prioritises both driver comfort and practicality.

Perhaps the standout feature is the electric opening tailgate with a drop-down step, available on the flagship Explore Pro variant. It’s joined by optional innovations such as a Smart Hatch pass-through between the cabin and tub and fold-flat MultiFold seats for added versatility.

The MGU9 range starts from $60,990 for the Explore, rising to $68,990 for the top-spec Explore Pro. MG is offering a $1,000 accessories pack for the first 100 pre-orders, with more details available at mgmotor.co.nz.
