2024 Peugeot e-Expert Long review

The Peugeot e-Expert is part of the brand’s commercial line up, and hails from the big Stellantis group. For those unfamiliar with Stellantis, it was the result of a 2021 merger between PSA Group (Citroen, DS Automobiles, Opel, Peugeot, Vauxhall) and Fiat Chrysler (Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Fiat Professional, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Mopar, Ram, VM Motori).

The merger made Stellantis the world’s third-largest vehicle manufacturer, behind Volkswagen and Toyota. It also gave the new entity more significant economies of scale and platform-sharing capacity across its 13 global brands. Multiple brands sharing platforms and technology is not a new concept in light commercial vehicles, but Stellantis took this concept to a new level in October 2023, when it created its Pro One strategic offensive.

It launched a renewed range of light commercial vans for the Citroen, Fiat, Opel, Peugeot and Vauxhall brands featuring second-generation zero-emission powertrains, full connectivity and upgraded autonomous driver assistance systems.

Peugeot e-Expert design

The updated Peugeot e-Expert family arrived in New Zealand in October 2024 in Medium (4981mm) and Long (5331mm) models. Four colours became available: standard Ice White, as pictured here, or Cumulus Grey, Titanium Grey, and Nera Black metallic finishes for an additional $550.

Adopting the new face of Peugeot vehicles, the e-Expert has a redesigned radiator grille featuring the brand’s new emblem at its centre, new LED headlights and a redesigned front bumper. The e-Expert’s cabin features a redesigned dashboard and steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster and a large 10-inch central touchscreen.

The previous e-Expert didn’t have many storage areas, frustrating drivers and tradespeople who used the van as a mobile office. Peugeot has attempted to rectify this by adding storage compartments on the upper part of the dashboard and the centre console.

A cupholder at each end of the dashboard will hold a smartphone upright, which is helpful if used as a navigation device, but as the e-Expert offers Apple Car Play and Android Auto through the touchscreen, this feature feels a little superfluous.

The unique Moduwork mobile office package is a standard feature on both e-Expert models. It provides a flip-down rotating work table, a load-through function in the bulkhead, and under-seat storage.

Peugeot e-Expert capability

Thanks to its underfloor battery, which has been designed not to impact the load capacity or volume, the e-Expert maintains its ICE counterpart’s payload and versatility. In the Long configuration, the e-Expert offers a payload of 1001kg and a loading volume of 6.1 cubic metres, easily accommodating a standard pallet. Its body length is 5.33 metres, its width is just over 2.2 metres with the mirrors open, and its height is just over 1.94 metres.

With the Moduwork package fitted, the loading volume increases to 5.8 cubic metres for the Medium e-Expert and 6.6 cubic metres for the Long. Its turning circle is 12.4 meters, which enhances its ability to navigate tight spaces and urban environments.

Peugeot e-Expert performance

Powered by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 75kWh, the e-Expert produces 100kW of power and 260Nm of torque and delivers a WLTP test range of 350km. There are three driving modes onboard the e-Expert – Eco to maximise range, Power for maximum performance under full load and Normal for everyday driving conditions. It has a regenerative braking system that can be activated at three levels using paddles behind the steering wheel to optimise range.

What are the Peugeot e-Expert charge times?

The e-Expert offers multiple charging methods, with indicative charging times of:

  • Quick charge – DC (100kW): Approximately 45 minutes to charge from 0-80%.
  • Single phase 32A wall box (7.4kW): Approximately 23 hours to recharge from 0-100%.
  • Three-phase 16A wall box (11kW): Approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes to charge from 0-100%.
  •  10A domestic electric plug (2.3kW): Approximately 36 hours to recharge from 0-100%.

Peugeot e-Expert driving experience

The e-Expert is ideally suited to urban last-mile delivery. Its engine performance is best described as adequate and leisurely. With just the driver onboard, it jogs rather than sprints from zero to 100km/h in 14.3 seconds.

We drove the E-Expert with three people in the cabin and a load of garden furniture in the back and we never once had any concerns about the electric motor’s ability to handle the weight onboard.

The e-Expert easily navigated the hilly and winding roads on the highway and kept up with the busy peak-hour traffic in the city. From the driver’s seat, it offers a commanding view of the road ahead and responsive steering. The regenerative brake system works quietly and effectively while harvesting valuable electricity.

However, the buyers of this van are more concerned about safety and efficiency than outright speed.

It has various advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), front and rear parking sensors, cameras, and large exterior mirrors. These are extremely helpful in a panel van without side glazing, creating a large blind spot when reversing out of angled car park spaces.

Overall, the Peugeot e-Expert more than meets the brief as an urban workhorse, but the asking price for this capability might be a bit more than some buyers are willing to pay. More is the pity.
