Mercedes-Benz is bringing back the drop-top version of its G-Class off-road SUV, and we’re absolutely here for it.
According to the German brand, the first examples of the new convertible G-Wagen have already begun testing around the world.

Images released of the camouflaged SUV show it testing in Australia, but it’s noted that it will soon be sent up to Sweden to be put through its paces in icy conditions.
“Engineers are gathering comprehensive data to ensure that the open-top driving experience of the G‑Class Cabriolet is promising an unparalleled and unmistakable G‑Class feeling for future drivers,” the release says.
Mercedes also calls this model a “special edition” in the release, meaning that it will likely be a limited-production when the final product is revealed.

Given the G-Class’ level of luxury, it should be no surprise to learn that drop-top Gs have been offered by Mercedes since the first iteration in 1979.
Since then, they have come in different shapes and specifications from two-door diesels through to high-performance four-door V8s.
Arguably the most off-the-wall G Cabriolet was the 2017 Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, which was powered by a twin-turbo V12 engine.
It’s unlikely this new G Cabriolet will be as ridiculous as that Landaulet, but considering its status as a special edition, Mercedes will probably throw its twin-turbo V8 at it, giving it more than enough grunt.
