Van market steady but registrations of new 4x4 utes continues skyward

The Kiwi love affair with buying new 4x4 pick up/chassis cab utes continues to bloom, while demand for their 4x2 siblings hasn’t increased quite as markedly and sales in the new light commercial van/ cab chassis sector remains steady according to year to date figures released today by the New Zealand Motor Industry Association.

Registrations year to date at November 30, 2017 for the total light commercial vehicle market under 3500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM) is 41,379 units for a 27.9% market share, up from 35,582 units and a 26.3% share in the previous corresponding period.

To the end of November 2017, New Zealand’s registrations of new 4x4 pickup/cab chassis grew to 20,690 units for a 13.9% market share, up from 17,063 units and a 12.6% market share in the previous corresponding period.

By comparison registrations of new 4x2 pickup/cab chassis grew more modestly to 13,732 units for a 9.3% market share, up from 12,303 units and a 9.1% market share in November 2016.

The market-leading Ford Ranger has sold 5706 new 4x4 models so far this year, up from 5055 units at the end of November 2016.

By comparison Ford has seen registrations of 3108 new Ranger 4x2 models up to November 30, 2017 up from 2883 in the previous corresponding period.

 

Toyota New Zealand has seen 4572 registrations of new Hilux 4x4 models, year to date November 30, 2017 up from 3490 in the previous corresponding period.

Registrations of new Hilux 4x2 variants grew to 3092 units to the end of November 30, 2017 up from 2290 units in the prior period.

Small vans/cab chassis under 2,500kg GVM registrations have fallen to 200 new units year to date from 258 in 2016.

However it is a different story for new large van cab/chassis under 3,500kg which has increased to 5,777 new registrations year to date at November 2017,     from 5,199 units in the previous corresponding period.

Registrations of new light buses have grown to 980 units year to date at November 30, from 759 new units in the previous corresponding period.

New heavy commercials over 3500kg GVM have grown to 5,458 new vehicle registrations in November 2017, up from 4,523 in the previous corresponding period.
