Transit goes electric

Ford NZ will soon have the Transit PHEV on offer here. This is a series plug-in, or what you might also know as a range extender.

Its 92.9kW electric motor is used to power the front wheels, drawing on energy stored in its 13.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This offers around 50km of EV range before a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol fires up as a generator to charge the battery pack. Ford is saying its PHEV has a range of around 500km overall. While not homologated for the local market, testing in the UK suggests an average of 2.4L/100km on the combined cycle.

The battery pack can be charged via the mains in 4.3 hours or by a Type-2 AC charger in 2.7 hours. The pack comes with an eight year/160,000km warranty.

The batteries are placed up under the floor, so the PHEV has the same 6.0m3 load capacity as the regular SWB Transit, and the payload is quoted at 1130kg. It’s not rated to tow, however.

Transit will be available as a cargo van at $89,990 while the Tourneo Titanium people mover will be $99,990. Ford’s commercial marketing manager, David Herbert, says there’s been a lot of interest in the van from government fleets, while others have been keen on it from a total cost of ownership standpoint. As he mentions, there are no RUCs involved here and the servicing cost is much reduced with the small petrol engine versus a larger diesel in the regular Transit.
