With the recent restyle of the Street Triple for 2020, it was only a matter of time before the refreshed Speed Triple showed its face and spy shots of the newcomer have been shown on the net.

Due for release next year, it gets a more aggressive face, no cowl, and an engine displacement upgrade to a likely 1160cc. Instead of a cowl hiding the TFT screen the RS, just like the new Streetfighter V4, gets a naked instrument.

However, the bike shot testing (not the one pictured above which is the current model) is a pre-production prototype and simply may not have had the cowl attached.

The centrally mounted air intake has changed, perhaps because it was rather small and the new 1160cc engine requires more air. Its rear subframe has been modified too, the new one comprising triangular-shaped tubing. That’s probably chasing weight savings, as the Speed has always been a bit porky.

The increased engine displacement is needed for emissions regs, but some of the opposition supernakeds are now out to 200hp, so with an increase to 170hp odd, the Speed Triple should still be in the game.

Engine castings and finishings have been tidied up, and the drive mechanism from the starter motor to the clutch has disappeared.

Following on from the Street Triple upgrade, expect a range-topping RS machine first. It will likely feature the same high performance forks as those fitted to the Street Triple RS and top-line Brembo brakes.
