Will Mitsubishi resurrect the Lancer Evolution?
Mitsubishi fans rejoice - the Lancer Evolution could be returning as a proper Lancer X successor, not an SUV.
While nothing is official, rumblings indicate Mitsi is looking at creating an eleventh-generation Lancer Evo with key elements of the drivetrain shared with the next-gen Renault Megane RS. That means a turbocharged four-cylinder presumably connected to a dual-clutch gearbox (although Renault offers the current RS with a manual option, so don’t rule it out) and a Mitsi-developed four-wheel-drive system. Output is said to be around 255kW/432Nm, enough to square off against Subaru’s limited-edition Impreza WRX STi S209. A 48-volt mild hybrid system has been mooted too.
The hi-po four-door would likely ride on the CMF-C/D F4 platform developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.
Apparently there have been plans to develop a successor to the Evo for a while now but they were placed on hold following heavy losses at the company and its subsequent purchase by Nissan in 2016.
