Volkswagen’s ID R electric racer may be about to dethrone the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo as king of the ‘Ring.

Anonymous sources close to VW have mentioned that the manufacturer is considering attempting the electric car lap record, currently held by the Nio EP9 with a time of 6:45.9.

Evidently, internal simulations have revealed that the ID R could be quicker than that. In fact, it could be faster than Porsche’s epic 919 Hybrid Evo. That car set a record time of 5:19.55 earlier this year, crushing the old all-time record of 6:11.13 set by a Porsche 956 in 1983.

Early simulation runs have the ID R stopping the clock at 5min:30sec. Of course, the hillclimb racer will be modified for the Nürburgring, including aero tweaks and changes to the electric drive system. Outright power at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb this year was 500kW. It’s not clear if the simulations were using the car unmodified or with the ‘Ring changes.

The attempt could take place next May when VW has booked exclusive track time.
