Toyota's Hilux Mako off-road beast makes public debut
Later this year, Toyota New Zealand will debut its answer to the increase in demand in off-road expert double-cab utes like the Ford Ranger Raptor and Nissan Navara N-Trek. And, those eager to see it in person can do so this weekend.
The Toyota Hilux Mako is on display this weekend at Auckland City Toyota Grey Lynn, where those window shopping for a performance pick-up and get up close and personal with it.
Starting at $79,990, customers keen on a Mako get their ute made-to-order by Toyota Thames Vehicle Operations. The order book opens this month, with Toyota New Zealand forecasting some 250 sales annually.
While the Mako features no engine performance upgrades (the new 2.8-litre turbo-diesel still produces its standard 150kW/500Nm), it does gain a comprehensive suspension and damping upgrade and a host of other changes to enhance the popular nameplate's off-roading abilities.
Model-specific flared arches, US-sourced 18-inch Black Rhino wheels, non-slip running boards, a rear bumper with a non-slip step, front and rear tow hooks, and plenty of Mako insignia underline the exterior changes. These tweaks complement a range-topping ARB Old Man Emu package, previously seen fitted to the Hilux Gladiator.
It includes a 40mm front lift and 50mm rear lift, and BP-51 bypass shocks with user-adjustable compression and rebound damping control. The package makes for a compelling alternative to Ford’s use of Fox Racing products underneath its off-road fare.
Uprated brakes borrowed from the upcoming Fortuner refresh (fitted with braided lines instead to improve feel and feedback) have also been fitted, as have Maxxis Razr off-road rubber.
Towing rates are unchanged, with the Mako still capable of tugging 3500kg and hauling 940kg in the bed. This differs from the Ranger Raptor, which has a reduced 2500kg towing figure due to its Fox Racing shockers.
