Toyota is set to beef out the RAV4 line-up with a plug-in option, debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show later in November.

The firm isn’t talking specifics just yet but asserts that it will be "the most powerful RAV4 yet.” For reference, the RAV4 Hybrid is the most potent model currently on sale, offering 163kW from its combination of a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and twin electric motors.

Some reckon Toyota will take the same set-up and upgrade it with a lithium-ion battery and increasing the output of the motors but for now, it’s anybody’s guess.

Visually, the PHEV RAV4 will get new vertically-oriented LED light strips, chrome-trimmed intakes in the lower fascia, gloss black mesh in the grille and a new colour, Supersonic Red.

More details will come to hand as we build up to the Los Angeles Auto Show, due to kick off on November 20.
