Toyota has let the covers fall off of its warmer Yaris, the GR Sport.

It’s not quite on a par with the Yaris GRMN hot hatch but it’s a notch above the standard car.

The GR Sport version leans more toward tweaking the suspension and increasing cornering capability than boosting outright power. Upgraded parts include Sachs Performance shocks and a solid, more rigid sway bar that replaces the standard hollow piece. The result of these tweaks is an 11mm decrease in ground clearance over a stock Yaris.

More aggressive aesthetics match the mechanical mods, with new black 17-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE050 tyres. The body gets a black roof with a rear spoiler, and piano black trim adorns the door mouldings, grille, mirror caps, fog light surrounds, and interior details of the headlights. For a bit of colour, buyers can add optional red decals to the front lip and top section of the rear bumper. It might look a bit Nismo but that’s hardly a bad thing.

Inside there are moderately bolstered sports seats paired with black and white Ultrasuede, with black headliner and satin chrome trim completing the look. The GT86 donates its three-spoke steering wheel.

The GR Sport will only be available as a five-door hatch with a 1.5-litre hybrid powerplant.
