Toyota GR Yaris to debut in January
Toyota’s rally-borne hot hatch was meant to be revealed at Rally Australia in November but the raging bushfires quickly put a stop to that. Now, Toyota has confirmed the GR Yaris will make its full debut on January 10 during the Tokyo Auto Salon.
New teaser images show a three-door hatch with chunky wheel arches covered in camouflage kicking up dust. An additional video showed it in action, along with a burbly exhaust note. It looks quite capable and a hell of a lot of fun.
Major details are still shrouded in secrecy but the sporty Yaris is rumoured to have a WRC-derived all-wheel drive system and a peppy four-pot hooked up to a manual gearbox.
We’ll get a sneak peak at the GR Yaris next week at the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival but don’t expect much information before next year. We’re not sure if Toyota will make the hatch a regular member of the band or restrict it to a limited-run homologation special. If it’s the latter, Toyota will build at least 25,000 of them to comply with WRC rules.
