Toyota’s latest CH-R is here, sporting an electrified powertrain that’s shared with the hybrid Corolla.

That means a 1.8-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor, offering 90kW of total system output with combined CO2 emissions of 97g/km and fuel consumption of 4.3L/100km. By comparison, the conventional C-HR 1.2 litre turbopetrol delivers 85kW of power and generates CO2 emissions of 144-148g/km from a rated fuel consumption of 6.4-6.5 l/100km, depending on the variant.

“We’re expanding the C-HR with Toyota’s hybrid-electric technology because it’s becoming increasingly popular among consumers due to its low emissions, great fuel economy and proven reliability,” according to Toyota NZ’s chief operating officer Neeraj Lala.

“Kiwi consumers are becoming more cognisant of the environmental impact of their vehicle. The increase of hybrids in our range to 17 per cent of total sales has dropped our overall average CO2 emissions by nine per cent on last year’s results.”

The CH-R Hybrid will be the first Toyota in New Zealand to get a new multimedia system that incorporates an eight-inch touchscreen display (previously 6.1-inch) and full smartphone integration, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Additionally, the entire CH-R range gets a mildly revised front end, and new LED taillights while higher level models have a Panoramic View Monitor, to provide a surround view of the vehicle at speeds of 20km/h of less. Toyota Safety Sense features come as standard, including a Pre-Collision System with AEB, active cruise control, and lane departure alert with steering assist. A reversing camera, blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert are also part of the package.

Pricing for the 2020 CH-R range starts at $32,990 for the 1.2-litre turbocharged FWD model and tops out at $37,990 for the 1.8 Hybrid Limited model, with availability starting this month. Toyota Driveaway pricing includes all on-road costs; WOF, registration, a full tank of fuel, the Toyota Care Service Advantage fixed-price servicing package, floor mats, and the three years or 100,000 km of warranty.
