Toyota’s highly anticipated return to the hot hatch space, the rally inspired Gazoo Racing (GR) Yaris, is approaching sold out status in little old New Zealand.

The turbocharged three-banger is set to take on the likes of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Honda Civic Type R when it lands locally later in the year, priced at $54,990. While it’s smaller than those aforementioned rivals, it’s arguably much more unique, and brings four-wheel drive to the party.

One of the most curious questions about New Zealand’s allocation of GR Yaris is volume. In a brief update, Toyota New Zealand (TNZ) wouldn’t confirm how many units we would be receiving. “I can say we have almost completely sold out of our units, but can’t confirm the number,” a TNZ spokesperson told NZ Autocar.

As reported previously, NZ Autocar understands that New Zealand has been allocated 19 GR Yaris’ in the opening allocation — a similar number to the amount of GR Supras brought into the country last year.

What makes that figure interesting is the volume that Australia is getting. Over the ditch, a huge 1000 units have already been pre-sold, with Toyota Australia announcing another 100 models are also up for grabs.

The firm announced a special AU$10,000 discount to the first 1000 buyers who put their name down for a GR Yaris (making the asking price a bargain AU$39,990). Within the space of a week, all 1000 orders had been filled, leading Toyota Australia to confirm that another 100 GR Yaris’ would be available for order, at a still discounted price of AU$44,950.

The 200kW/360Nm pocket rocket is just the next step in Toyota’s hopes of growing GR into a performance car empire. A GR Corolla and GR C-HR compact crossover are also in the pipeline, with the upcoming all-new 86 also likely to receive some form of GR treatment.
