Speedway granted Western Springs lease extension
Speedway has been granted a last-minute extension to stay at Western Springs.
Details of the agreement between Auckland Council and promotor Bill Buckley are not known, including the length of the extension. A statement is expected from both parties today.
Western Springs’ Speedway lease was due to close at the end of this season, March 16. A Grand Final Night is planned to celebrate 90 years of racing, including a kids’ dance competition and fireworks.
Yesterday, the Auckland Stock and Saloon Club offered its facilities at Waikaraka Park, with president Frank Irvine saying the club wanted to be part of talks about the long-term solution to speedway in Auckland. That offer was declined due to the lack of spectator accommodation, safety issues and the track being unsuitable for international drivers.
Since the start of the month tempers have flared with Buckley launching a tirade against the Auckland Council.
Some members within Auckland Council have since come out in support of Buckley and the speedway community to keep racing at the venue until a viable solution is found.
