Porsche will enter the 2020 season of the FIA R-GT Cup with a rally car based on the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

While the 911 and 959 have both basked in rally glory during the 20th century, now it’s the Cayman’s time to shine. The positive reaction of the Cayman GT4 Clubsport Rally Concept car was a big factor in prompting Porsche to return to rallying, and the layout of the Cayman lent itself well to the FIA R-GT regulations.

Being based on the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, power will likely come from a 3.8-litre flat-six. The track version of the car produces 316kW but there could be further tweaks as the car is made rally-ready.

A demo car will run at Porsche’s Winter Event before the GP Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria, on January 19 to 20. Richard Lietz will be behind the wheel.
