Patricio O’Ward escapes injury after heavy Indy 500 practice crash
Rookie Patricio O’Ward has avoided injury after a big smack in Thursday practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The young driver went low through turn 2 and sped into the outside safety barrier at a 45-degree angle. The nose cone collapsed as the car hit the wall,
before rebounding into the air. O’Ward’s racer nearly tipped over before landing on its wheels.
As the NBC commentators say, two pockets in the body kit of the new IndyCar allow air to pass through a flipping car, reducing the chance of it becoming truly airborne.
Thankfully, O’Ward emerged from the wreckage unharmed. However his race may be over before it begins as it’s the Carlin team may not have a spare car available.
