New Zealand's best selling new vehicles in 2019
With another decade all wrapped up we now know which vehicles are the most popular amongst Kiwis. Spoiler, they’re utes.
Specifically, the most popular new vehicle in New Zealand is the Ford Ranger, with 9485 sold over 2019. Coming in second is Toyota’s Hilux, ahead of the first passenger vehicle on the list, the Toyota Corolla, though 3990 of the Corolla’s 6804 registrations were to rental companies.
Next up is the RAV4, also buoyed by rental sales, followed by the Mitsubishi Triton and Holden Colorado. Nissan’s Navara was beaten to seventh place barely by the Mazda CX-5, with Kia’s Sportage close behind the Nissan workhorse.
The final place in the top 10 list goes to the perennially popular Suzuki Swift.
For segments, the SUV Medium class held firm in first place, responsible for almost one in five new vehicle sales. Four-wheel drive utes were the second most popular, just edging out compact SUVs. Small cars sold better than large SUVs by less than one per cent while both beat out two-wheel drive utes. Light sedans spoke to buyers’ wallets three per cent more than vans and, in case you needed more proof the sedan is dying, medium and large sedans rounded out the top 10 list. Both segments combined sold less than half of what 4x2 pick-up/cab chassis managed.
Over in Australia, the three favourite new vehicles had the Hilux beating the Ranger while the Corolla took the bronze medal (likely due to rental sales). The sales landscape in the UK is different altogether, with the top three all being hatchbacks. Ford will be pleased, as its Fiesta was the top seller, ahead of the VW Golf and its new-generation Focus.
