New Toyota Supra to get turbocharged V6, manual transmission
Recent rumblings have had Toyota's upcoming Supra revival pegged without a manual transmission and sourcing BMW engines for the powertrain. However, a new leak turns that around.
We all know that the recently-debuted BMW Z4 and the yet-to-debut Toyota Supra share DNA. Earlier in the year, various model codes showed the BMW to have a manual transmission option while Toyota's coupe did not.
Now a new leak, coming from the IH8Mud forum, has a member speaking with a Toyota representative about the 200 series Land Cruiser. The rep apparently worked on the Land Cruiser in Japan and has a finger in all of Toyota's North American pies. He said to "expect a manual transmission option" in the Supra.
He also denied rumours of Toyota using BMW's inline-six engine, instead saying a turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 will power the reborn Supra. Output could be "north of 400 horsepower" (298kW). The rumoured hybrid powertrain is also still a possibility.
Toyota could possibly reveal the 2019 Supra at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year, while BMW gave us our first look at the Z4 at Pebble Beach very recently. The Supra obviously won't share any exterior design cues but the Z4 at least gives is an idea of the size of Toyota's sports car.
