A leak from the US suggests that the next Toyota 86 will make its debut mid-2021, in America at least. The second-gen sportster will be called the GR 86 in line with the GR Supra and GR Yaris.

And it will come with more grunt, thanks to the use of a turbocharged 2.4-litre engine making around 185kW, giving it a welcome boost in the power stakes. This flat four is sourced from Subaru’s US-only Ascent large SUV.

In that application it works with a CVT but there are no transmission deets for the new sportster just yet. A manual will be a certainty but whether a CVT will cut it for the automatic model is another thing. Such a move would get the keyboard critics into a lather.

While the first-generation car sat on a Subaru platform, this next one will use a major redevelopment of Toyota’s TNGA architecture.

Whether there will be a Subaru version is not yet clear, as the BRZ has not exactly been a raging success. Although much the same could be said of the 86, Toyota is keen to press on with a second-generation version as the firm adopts a ‘we are no longer boring’ image.
