It appears Mercedes-AMG is working on a new product to take the fight to Porsche’s 718 Cayman/Boxster twins.

A few sources spilled some beans to Autocar UK, which reports AMG engineers have shown the model to management. It’s being billed as an SLC-Class successor, with a mid-engined, rear-drive layout and styling cues from the AMG Project One hypercar.

“Project One represents the start of a new era for Mercedes-AMG, not only in terms of the electrified driveline but also the placement of it behind the cabin,” one source told Autocar. “Just how it will affect future models remains to be seen. However, a mid-rear layout is no longer taboo.”

Coupe and roadster variants are planned, with two power outputs. These are expected to be similar to the upcoming A35 and A45 hot hatches, with more track-focused variants coming later in the model’s life.
