According to overseas reports, Mini’s upcoming electric car will be a proper, performance-oriented hot hatch, claimed to be an industry first.

The car, to be badged Cooper S E, will be based on the Mini three-door hatchback while its conventional UKL1 platform will be adapted to accommodate the battery pack and electric drivetrain of the BMW i3S.

It’s unclear which end the drive will be sent to however, the rears like the i3, or the fronts as per the Mini. But it should have around 135kW of go, and a circa seven second 0-100km/h time.

Expect range to be around the 320km mark, although if the Cooper S E is a hot hatch as reported, that figure may drop somewhat in the real world.

Mini is expected to reveal the electric hatch this year as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.
