Mid-engined Corvette to debut in July
GM has revealed that the C8 generation of Corvette will debut in July, marking the first official confirmation of the mid-engined ‘Vette.
July 18 is the actual date to pencil into your calendars but - oddly for a launch like this - we really don’t know much about the car. Usually, various leaks and teasers would have revealed information about the model but this time around we’re running on rumours only.
So far, we think the C8 will launch with a naturally-aspirated 6.2-litre V8 producing at least 343kW, pipping the current Mustang GT by about four kilowatts. However, that looks to be a base variant. Higher power models are on the cards, with as much as 1000hp (745kW) on tap. The engine is so powerful, in fact, that there were reports of twisting frames as a result of the output. Those issues, as well as electrical gremlins, have evidently been resolved.
As for the look, well, your guess is as good as ours. We can see some chunky vents just aft of the door for engine cooling and a sharp front end typical of a Corvette but that’s about it. In the meantime, check out this sexy render of a topless C8, courtesy of MidEngineCorvetteForum and hope that the GM designers are working on something similar.
