Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off the staunch Concept GLB at Auto Shanghai last night.

It previews an upcoming production model with the same name and is a demonstration of what the GLA might become when configured as a sporty all-rounder.

The concept is 4.62m long and has a wheelbase of 2.82m which allows for three rows of seating and seven passengers. Merc says that the two rearmost pews will accept two “medium-sized occupants” so we guess that means kids. Otherwise, the interior is pretty standard fare for Mercedes-Benz these days.

The exterior is features shapely contours and a rugged body. BF Goodrich off-road tyres encase two-tone 17-inch wheels while short overhangs, a rooftop gear box and additional LED lighting make the concept look trail ready.

Power is sourced from a 2.0-litre petrol engine offering 167kW and 350Nm paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Needless to say, 4Matic all-wheel drive is included with three drive modes.

Mercedes says that the concept will fit in between the GLA and GLC but stopped short of revealing when it would be released. The model looks close to production though so we could see it as early as next year.
